The 120-day 2013 legislative session began on January 9, 2013. This year, the democrats hold a majority in the state senate and the state house. Some of the issues that will likely be debated this year include jobs, health care, marijuana regulation, gun control, civil unions, ASSET, schools and the death penalty. Due to term limits and redistricting, one-third of the Colorado General Assembly will be new in 2013. For this reason, we encourage you to get to know your new state representative and senator at this year’s CSNA Day at the Capitol and throughout the year. For the first time in years, the state revenue is strong and growing. The state is slowly recovering from the recession and the General Assembly will not need to make budget reductions to balance the budget. For this reason, the Colorado School Nutrition budget will likely be held constant from last year’s levels.
Here is a Summary of the 2013-14 School Nutrition Budget • No Base Rate Reductions to the Colorado Health and Nutrition line in the Department of Education Budget. (Fed Funds- $156,631,328 and State Match-$2,472,644) • $843,495 General Fund Appropriation for the Smart Start Program • $850,000 Cash Fund Appropriation for the School Lunch Protection Act
